Social Security Disability - How To Apply For Social Security Disability Benefits

To qualify for Social Security disability benefits, you must have a physical or mental impairment that prevents you from doing any gainful work and has lasted, or can be expected to last for at least one year or is expected to result in death.

You should apply for Social Security disability benefits as soon as you become disabled. Applications may be made in person at your local Social Security Administration office, by telephone, or by mail. If a disabled person in your family cannot manage his or her own affairs, the application may be completed by a spouse, relative, friend or guardian.

You can shorten the time it takes to complete an application and process your claim if you have the following information when you apply: The Social Security number and proof of age for you, your spouse and your dependent children; the name, address and telephone number of each doctor and hospital that treated you and the approximate dates of treatment; a list of your employers during the past 15 years and a description of the kind of work you did on each job; a copy of your last W-2 form or federal tax return; the dates of any military service; the dates of prior marriages if your spouse is applying; and the claim number for any workers' compensation, veterans' benefits or any other claim that you have filed because of your disability.

If you have questions about your claim, or in the event that your claim is denied, you should contact Wolf & Hogan immediately!
