Social Security Disability - How Is Disability Defined?
The word disability has different meanings in different
areas of the law. Under government programs such as Social
Security Disability Insurance and Supplemental Security
Income, being disabled is defined as: Having a medically
proven physical or mental impairment that prevents a person
from doing any substantially gainful work and that has or is
expected to last at least one year or result in death. In
short, to qualify for benefits, you must be totally disabled
from any kind of work and must remain or be expected to remain
disabled for at least one year or be expected to die as a
result of the disabling condition.
The Social Security Administration evaluates disability
based on a person's age, education, and previous work
experience. If you have questions about your claim, or in the
event that your claim is denied, you should contact
